Terms of Service

These terms cover your use of Margin and any themes or additional content sold for Margin. By installing, activating, or using Margin, you agree to them.

1. The agreement

"Margin," "we," "us," or "our" refers to Margin, a product of RAJ Studios based in Canada. "You" refers to the individual who purchased and uses the software. These terms form a binding agreement between you and Margin.

If you do not agree to any part of these terms, do not install or use Margin.

2. License to use Margin

Upon purchase and activation, we grant you a personal, perpetual, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use Margin on one Mac that you own or personally control.

If you'd like to use Margin on a second Mac you own (for example, a home Mac and a work Mac), email us at [email protected] — we offer additional personal licenses at 50% off. Your journal entries are not shared between Macs; each license operates as its own independent vault.

Your license is for personal use. It does not include the right to:

  • Resell, sublicense, rent, lease, or otherwise transfer your license to another person.
  • Distribute, share, or publish your license key.
  • Reverse-engineer, decompile, or disassemble Margin, except where this restriction is expressly prohibited by applicable law.
  • Remove or alter any copyright, trademark, or other proprietary notices.
  • Use Margin in any way that violates applicable law.

3. Themes and additional content

Margin includes a set of bundled themes at the time of purchase. Additional themes purchased through the Theme Store are sold as separate one-time licenses, tied to your Margin account. Theme licenses are governed by the same terms in section 2.

Commissioned themes incorporate original artwork created by independent artists. We own or license the rights to use that artwork inside Margin. You receive a license to use the theme within Margin; you do not receive any rights to reproduce, redistribute, or use the underlying artwork outside Margin.

4. App updates

Your Margin license includes all future app updates for the V1 generation of Margin. We may release a future major version (V2, V3, etc.) as a separate paid upgrade; if we do, you'll be offered a discount as an existing customer. We will not retroactively gate features behind a subscription.

5. Payments and refunds

Purchases are processed by Paddle.com Market Limited ("Paddle"), the merchant of record. Paddle collects payment, charges applicable sales tax/VAT/GST, and issues receipts. Refunds are governed by our Refund Policy.

6. Privacy

Margin is designed to be local-first and privacy-preserving. Your journal entries are encrypted on your Mac and never transmitted to us. For full details, see our Privacy Policy.

7. Ownership and intellectual property

Margin, including the app, its name, design, source code, documentation, and bundled artwork, is the intellectual property of Margin, our licensors, and our partnered artists. This license does not transfer ownership; you receive only the right to use Margin under these terms.

Your journal entries remain entirely yours. We claim no ownership of, and no license to, any content you create in Margin.

8. Warranty disclaimer

Margin is provided "as is" and "as available." To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

While Margin is designed to keep your data safe and local, you are responsible for maintaining your own backups. Margin's encryption depends on you keeping your password and recovery key safe; we cannot recover entries if both are lost.

9. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Margin's total liability to you for any claim arising out of or relating to these terms or your use of Margin is limited to the amount you paid for Margin in the 12 months preceding the claim.

We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or exemplary damages, including loss of data, loss of profits, or business interruption.

10. Termination

Your license remains in effect for as long as you comply with these terms. If you materially breach these terms, we may suspend or terminate your license. You may stop using Margin at any time; uninstalling Margin does not entitle you to a refund except as set out in the Refund Policy.

11. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms occasionally to reflect changes in the product, in applicable law, or in our business. We'll post the new version here with an updated "Last updated" date. Material changes will be noted on the Margin website. Continued use of Margin after a change means you accept the updated terms.

12. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario, Canada, and the applicable laws of Canada, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. You agree that any dispute will be heard in the courts of Ontario, Canada, unless applicable consumer-protection law requires otherwise.
